St. Marianne Cope, a Sister of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities, was instrumental in establishing two of the first hospitals in central New York: St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica (1866) and St. Joseph Hospital Health Center in Syracuse (1869). In addition, she founded Malulani Hospital, the first hospital in Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii (1884).
