Saint Marianne Cope, a Sister of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities, was instrumental in establishing two of the first hospitals in central New York: St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica (1866) and St. Joseph Hospital Health Center in Syracuse (1869). In addition, she founded Malulani Hospital, the first hospital in Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii (1884). All three facilities continue serving patients today.
